Biography
Dr Sibongile Mashaphu is a specialist psychiatrist, lecturer and researcher, with over 20 years of clinical experience in psychiatry and mental health. She is an alumnus of UKZN, with four degrees obtained through the School of Clinical Medicine, including a PhD in Psychiatry. Her areas of expertise include chronic HIV and Mental health, mental health issues affecting women, such as anxiety, depression, gender-based violence and adverse childhood experiences. She has done a lot of research in these areas, supervised several post graduate students towards masters and PhD degrees, and her work is published in local and international journals. She has seen the success of group interventions in managing common mental health disorders due to cost effectiveness and high efficacy. Her PhD study explored the feasibility of group interventions for couples with HIV, and she continues to adapt and develop interventions in other areas of mental health. She is currently an executive member of the SASOP Women’s Mental Health group, a role that allows her to advocate for women’s wellbeing.
